Born on May 11, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Shabba Doo was the stage name of actor, dancer, and choreographer Adolfo Quiñones.

He became interested in performing when his family moved to Los Angeles, California, in the 1970s and soon began dancing in nightclubs. When he joined the dance group The Lockers — responsible for popularizing the locking style of street dance — his profile escalated, and he began appearing regularly in mainstream productions and media.

He most famously played Orlando “Ozone” Barco, one of the lead characters in the 1984 breakdancing-themed musical film Breakin’ and its sequel Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo in the same year. Other movies he appeared in included 1978’s Disco Fever, 1980’s Xanadu, 1989’s Tango & Cash, and 1990’s Lambada.

Shabba Doo also appeared on television in episodes of Miami Vice, Kids Incorporated, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, and Married… with Children, amongst other shows.

As a choreographer, he performed and choreographed dances for such high-profile stars as Madonna, Luther Vandross, Three Six Mafia, Chaka Khan, and Lionel Richie. He appeared in the video for the latter’s classic song “All Night Long.”

Sadly, he died on Dec. 29, 2020, in Los Angeles at 65. But what happened?

How did Shabba Doo die?

As per TMZ, the medical examiner listed Shabba Doo’s cause of death as arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, otherwise known as clogged arteries.

Initially, upon the announcement of his passing, as per Variety, the cause of death wasn’t known, but he was discovered unconscious just one day after posting that he was feeling better after a period of battling COVID-19. He wrote on Facebook, “Good news y’all! I’m feeling all better, just a wee bit sluggish from my cold, but the good news is I’m Covid 19 negative! Woo hoo!”

His memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at a Los Angeles church. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only his immediate family — his two children and his — were allowed to attend it.

It’s been a tumultuous year for Kate Middleton, as — after briefly becoming the most talked-about person on the internet — the Princess of Wales officially confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer back in March. Since then, Catherine has made a few much-praised public appearances — most recently her surprise attendance at Wimbledon — but it should be stressed that she’s not out of the woods yet.

As happens in times like this, it seems this health crisis has brought Kate closer together with her family — but only those immediately around her. Veteran Royal commentator Jennie Bond has claimed that Prince William and Kate are “a tight and strong unit” after 13 years of marriage and the events of this year have only made them stronger. On the other hand, Catherine is said to have essentially erased brother-in-law Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle from her thoughts. Both for the moment and potentially forever more.

“I’m sure cancer has made Catherine take a look at her life and her priorities,” Bond alleged. “And I think those priorities are firmly with her family, her husband and her children. I don’t think she has any room in her head or her heart to worry about the dramas of the past or anything that Harry and Meghan might say or do now… or in the future.”

This is just one way in which Harry and Meghan are being excluded from the Royal family. Another? King Charles and Queen Camilla are whisking everyone but them off on a family vacation — including the still-ill Kate.

Kate Middleton to leave England despite ongoing cancer battle

Summer holidays are a fixture of every family’s year, but they’re extra extravagant when you happen to be a Royal. The Windsors, for instance, make an annual tradition of embarking on a summertime retreat to the king’s sprawling Balmoral estate in Scotland. With Kate’s illness, it was speculated that William and company might not have joined in the fun this year, but as it happens the Waleses are all on board.

Both William and Kate will be accompanying their children — Prince George (11), Princess Charlotte (9), and Prince Louis (6) — on the Balmoral break, which Royal expert Angela Levin considers to be a sign of just how close Kate has become with her in-laws.

“She is going to Scotland to be with the family,” Levn said. “This is a huge move. Not only because she is obviously not well yet, but it shows she feels very comfortable with the Royal family.”

Levin went on to stress that Kate must feel entirely at ease with the king and queen consort if she’s willing to vacation with them while still suffering from her impacted health.

“She is very happy with the King and the Queen and she knows they will understand if she has to rest,” Levin continued. “She can say what she likes and be warmed. I think it’s wonderful she can do that. The children will be delighted also.”

Don’t expect the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their kids to hike around the Highlands with the Royals, though. Even so, Harry and Meghan probably aren’t too bummed, what with their own trip to Colombia coming up this August.

As the 2024 presidential election race heats up, both the Republican and Democratic campaigns are leveraging celebrities to push their message and endorse their parties.

The GOP last month tapped Amber Rose to advocate for Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, while Kamala Harris’ campaign enlisted the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo at a recent event in Atlanta. One celebrity whose endorsement might also be sought-after by both campaigns is Snoop Dogg. 

The rapper — who just completed an iconic run as an NBC Olympics correspondent — hasn’t been shy about weighing into politics in the past. Over the years, the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” singer has seemingly changed his political views, and his thoughts on the current presidential race have not yet been revealed.

So, as more celebrities continue to throw their support behind each campaign, do we know exactly where Snoop Dogg stands?

Snoop Dogg’s political views

For most of his career in the spotlight, Snoop Dogg has advocated for policies and candidates that largely align with the Democratic Party. In 2012, for example, he publicly revealed he would be voting for Barack Obama over Mitt Romney in that year’s election. Years later, in 2017, Snoop Dogg featured on the song “Lavender”, which was accompanied by a music video that parodied then-President Donald Trump as a clown. 

At the time of that song’s release, Snoop Dogg described Trump as “a motherf***er” and compared the Republican Party’s policies to “a lot of clown sh*t.” In response, Trump wrote on social media that Snoop Dogg’s was in the midst of a “failing career.” Then, in 2020, Snoop Dogg revealed in an interview that he would again be voting for the Democratic Party, since he “can’t stand to see this punk [Trump] in office one more year.”

However, the rapper’s views on Trump seemed to soften in the years that followed. When asked about his thoughts on Trump in 2024, Snoop Dogg said he “has done only great things for me,” citing the former President’s pardoning of Michael Harris. For context, Harris co-founded Death Row Records, the label that first signed Snoop Dogg for the release of his debut album. 

“[Trump] ain’t done nothing wrong to me… he pardoned Michael Harris,” Snoop Dogg said. “I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.” While the rapper’s U-turn in his thoughts on Trump caused backlash among fans, Snoop Dogg remained coy about whether he’d support Trump or then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

“I may have to,” Snoop Dogg said when asked if he’d endorse either candidate. “There are mixed views on that, so I want to see what the people say.”

Jethro Lazenby was born in 1991 in Melbourne, Australia, to model Beau Lazenby. He was the son of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds frontman Nick Cave, but he didn’t discover that information until he was seven or eight. He later adopted his father’s surname for commercial purposes.

Lazenby became a model after being scouted in his birth city. He also did some acting work, appearing in the movies Corroboree (2007) and My Little Princess (2011), and occasionally worked as a photographer.

He had a troubled life, battling with substance abuse, and found himself on the wrong side of the law on several occasions, which his lawyer, Sean Ghattas, claimed a schizophrenia diagnosis (as per the BBC) was at least partially responsible for.

On March 7, 2022, Lazenby’s mother found him at her front door and let him stay the night. They argued the following morning, and he kneed her in the face, leaving her bleeding and bruised, resulting in jail time — something he had already experienced in 2018 after being violent to his then-girlfriend.

Tragically, he passed away on May 6, 2022. Conflicting reports suggest he was either 30 or 31. He had only been released on bail a day or so earlier for the attack on his mother. But how did he die?

How did Jethro Lazenby die?

While no cause of death was publicly disclosed following Jethro Lazenby’s passing, further information has come to light in the past two years.

His on-off girlfriend, Danica Conwell, spoke to the Daily Mail and said that, despite rumors to the contrary, he did not die by suicide. He was, however, struggling with heroin addiction and was found in a seedy motel room at the Coburg Motor Inn in northern Melbourne, which may suggest drugs had a part to play in his passing.

Conwell told the publication that Lazenby’s family excluded her from his funeral and wake plan, despite her begging to be allowed to attend.

As per the Mail Online, Nick Cave has spoken of his devastation in losing two sons, as his other son, Arthur, died after “freaking out” and falling from a cliff near his home in Brighton, England, after taking LSD for the first time in 2015. He was only 15.

JoJo Siwa is a great dancer, but some of her more recent choreography has raised a few eyebrows. The singer is also active on social media, and she recently decided to show everyone her moves (while dancing to her controversial track, “Karma”) during a visit to the Empire State Building.

She looks animated when busting her moves and her energy is enviable. Still, when watching the clip, which was shared by the official Empire State Building TikTok account, something is immediately obvious: the silence.

There is no one cheering for Siwa. There are no fans around who are getting hyped by her moves, and almost no one has even stopped to watch. Honestly, the whole thing feels kinda sad. The text onscreen reads, “POV: you ran into JoJo Siwa filming a TikTok,” and the person who runs the empirestatebldg TikTok clearly approved because they captioned the post with, “Iconnnnnn.” In the comment section, they confirmed our suspicions of being a JoJo fan, as they wrote, “I am JoJo’s biggest fan (literally).” However, the rest of the comment section was less complimentary.

Not everyone is impressed with JoJo Siwa’s dance moves

Comments on the post have summed up people’s feelings about JoJo Siwa, and some admire her resilience. “The fact she’s just like still at it,” a comment reads. Another shared similar thoughts, writing, “She will do anything to keep this song alive.”

Others have suggestions for improving the video. “Somebody insert the shoe squeak sound,” a comment reads. But it’s the comparisons to our own childhood performances that really bring a smile to the face. “Its like a kid performing for relatives during christmas and relatives be cheering it…,” someone wrote. Another shared similar thoughts, writing, “This looks like living room performances we forced our parents to watch when we were kids.”

The same jokes that we have heard before have also returned. “Hii! Your song saved me. I’ve been suffering from a severe depression episode, when Karma came on the radio, and I got out of my bed for the first time in 3 weeks to turn it off,” a fan reacted. “All JoJo content I see is AGAINST MY WILL,” another weighed in.

The Olympics closing ceremony saw the Red Hot Chilli Peppers make a surprise appearance from Los Angeles, where the 2028 Summer Olympics will take place. When you think about it, it makes sense considering half of their discography revolves around how great California is.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers have been waxing lyrical about the sun bleached state for decades, but behind their music, and behind the cool façade the band exudes there is a darker story. Especially when it comes to frontman Anthony Kiedis, who committed some truly terrible acts after he rose to fame.

What happened to Anthony Kiedis?

In his autobiography, Scar Tissue, Kiedis detailed his rough childhood. At the age of 12, he moved away from his mother, to be with his father in Hollywood. While he was a loner for much of his youth, his friendship with Mike Balzary, AKA Flea, resulted in him getting into all sorts of trouble, and even breaking his back at the age of 15. 

Aside from his friends getting him into trouble, Kiedis’s father was also a terrible influence — he had been trying to make it as an actor, but ended up having to resort to selling drugs to other actors to make ends meet. Because of this, Anthony was around all kinds of illegal substances as a teenager, trying heroin for the first time at the incredibly young age of 14.

Also at the age of 14, he was statutorily raped by his father’s girlfriend. His childhood led to Kiedis struggling with opioid abuse for years, but it also resulted in his ideas of morality being completely warped. Of course, none of this would excuse what the singer would go on to do in adulthood, but it does somewhat explain it.

What did Anthony Kiedis do?

The appalling actions committed by the Chilli Peppers frontman are surprising and disappointing to hear. From sleeping with underage girls to sexual battery, the singer has been causing controversy and behaving like a wild animal since at least 1986. According to an article from Far Out, Kiedis started dating 16-year-old Skye Donovan when he was 24. 16 still counts as being a minor in the state of California, but despite this, he continued seeing her for a number of years. The relationship inspired the RHCP song, “Catholic School Girls Rule.”

In his autobiography, Kiedis also admits to sleeping with a 14-year-old both before and after finding out her age. While that is arguably the worst thing Kiedis did, there are a few other examples, including one time in 1989 when he was convicted of sexual battery after exposing himself and touching his crotch to a woman’s face. 

Did Anthony Kiedis face any consequences?

Not only has the singer never really expressed remorse for his actions, but he’s never really faced any consequences for them, either. Of course, all of this was a really long time ago, but it doesn’t change the fact that his actions as a young adult were pretty horrific. He’s gone on to have a successful career which persists to this day, and he’s even appeared in Hollywood blockbusters like Point Break.

How did Jim Henson pass away?

According to People, Henson passed away after contracting toxic shock syndrome. Hearing about what happened before his death is upsetting, especially when fans remember how kind he was. When Henson was interviewed on the The Arsenio Hall Show in May 1990, he didn’t feel well. It turned out that he had been infected with bacteria, which made it hard for him to keep traveling and working, although he did his best to keep going. He died after spending time at New York Presbyterian Hospital when a bacteria called streptococcus pyogenes caused toxic shock syndrome.

As Entertainment Weekly reported in 1990, Henson’s lungs were affected by the bacteria, and it doesn’t sound like there was any way to save him. He was only 53 years old. Henson talked about feeling exhausted and also said he had come down with a cold, but things were much worse than that. This is a sobering reminder that people can get very sick, very fast, and that sometimes, tragically, there’s no coming back from it.

I remember being terrified of toxic shock syndrome as a kid growing up in the ’90s, and as the Cleveland Clinic explained, this can definitely happen when using tampons. But it’s also possible for someone to get this disease when one of their body parts gets infected. The Cleveland Clinic noted that if someone can get help, it’s possible to survive it. Sadly, that didn’t happen here.

Since Henson brought joy to so many kids (and adults), it’s terrible to imagine what it was like for him at the end. Fans will always have Kermit, Miss Piggy, and all the other heartwarming characters that Henson shared with the world.

An anime icon passed away in mid-August 2024, leaving hordes of Pokémon fans in mourning over the loss of an enduring favorite.

Rachael Lillis, known best for her longstanding contributions to the litany of Pokémon projects out there, died at the age of 46 on Aug. 10. Her loss robs the world of the voice actor behind a range of Pokémon favorites, most notably the characters of Misty and Jessie. These two staples of the series have been voiced by Lillis since the late ’90s, and without her contributions, they’ll never be quite the same again.

The stark differences between Misty and Jessie are enough, all by themselves, to underline the talent Lillis brought to every Pokémon project she was involved in. Misty is a longtime companion and ally to Ash Ketchum, the primary protagonist of the sprawling universe, and she travelled alongside him for a full five seasons before retiring to oversee her family gym. Even then she later returned, cementing Misty as among the most prominent trainers out there.

Then there’s Jessie, one of three leading antagonists across dozens of Pokémon releases. One third of the ever-present Team Rocket, Jessie may be an even more vital character than Misty, but the two couldn’t be more different. Their starkly opposing characterizations serve to emphasize just how talented Lillis was, and how much the Pokémon community will miss this staple of the voice acting community.

What was Rachael Lillis’ cause of death?

Lillis lost her life far too young, after months of battling a breast cancer diagnosis. News that Lillis had been diagnosed with breast cancer only reached the star’s fans earlier this summer — in May of 2024 — but the instant support that announcement inspired shows exactly how loved she was.

A GoFundMe seeking to raise funds for Lillis’ medical care was initiated by her sister in May, and by the time of Lillis’ death, it had raised $96,478 from more than 2,600 donors. People flooded from all walks of life to contribute anything they could, offering words of support and love in the comments, and frequently citing favored Lillis projects and thanking the voice actor for being such a “great part of everyone’s childhood.“

On the same GoFundMe, Lillis’ older sister provided an announcement of her death, explaining that she “passed peacefully” and blessedly “without pain.” Any remaining funds in the GoFundMe will go toward remaining medical expenses, funeral arrangements, and — assuming there’s some left over — toward efforts to combat cancer.

For a large majority of the American public, not having to bear witness to Trump’s tomfoolery and incoherent ramblings on a daily basis (no, we haven’t forgotten covfefe) has certainly been a blessing. For the ever-invested MAGA crowd, however, an upcoming tell-all from Trump with none other than Musk is like Christmas morning come early.

Ahead of the aforementioned “sit down,” which is scheduled to commence on Aug. 12 at 8:00 pm EST on X, voters are interested to learn exactly why Musk is insistent on speaking with the Orange Thanos Variant in the flesh, and how this interview was planned in the first place.

The Trump-Musk interview, explained

For those who regularly read news headlines and stay informed about the power-hungry CEOs and politicians of the world, it should hardly come as a surprise that Musk and Trump have a close bond. As such, the reasoning behind this interview is as crystal clear as the Pacific Islands oceans — Musk is aiming to provide a platform for Trump that is “unscripted with no limits on subject matter.”

Of course, with how much Trump has been trying to coerce VP and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris into conducting their September debate on Fox News instead of ABC, it makes perfect sense why Trump would wish to hold an interview with Musk, one of his biggest collaborators and supporters, who will surely allow him to go off the rails and spread a cauldron of misinformation to voters.

On the week Bad Boys: Ride or Die passed $400 million at the global box office, the fourth chapter in Martin Lawrence and Will Smith’s crowd-pleaser franchise received a precious endorsement from none other than Stephen King.

The accomplished American author, who infamously provides commentary for everything from the current state of affairs to his favorite recent watches and reads on his X account, gave the 2024 summer action comedy blockbuster his seal of approval, calling it “a lot of fun.” He took the opportunity to spotlight comedy legend Martin Lawrence’s performance, saying he “always makes [him] laugh,” but the lack of love for Martin’s controversial co-star raised eyebrows among King’s followers.

While we doubt King omitted Will Smith from his review on purpose, the 55-year-old actor has been a bit of a sensitive topic ever since the now-infamous Oscars kerfuffle of 2022 where he slapped Chris Rock on stage. Bad Boys 4 has been Smith’s big return to the silver screen after the critical and commercial failure of Apple TV Plus’ Emancipation on the heels of the slap scandal. The comedy movie even went out of its way to make fun of the incident in its script, fully embracing its role in Smith’s career turnaround. And it’s working.

Not only has Bad Boys: Ride or Die become a box office hit, but it has also appeased audiences and critics. Lawrence and Smith’s chemistry on whose shoulders this franchise was built has obviously received most of the praise, but critics have also recognized and complimented director duo Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi’s commitment to the craziness that has come to define the action comedy series. Bad Boys 4‘s lukewarm 65% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes is cushioned by a much more favorable — and ultimately more important —97% audience score, proving the big majority of moviegoers are siding with Stephen King on this one.

The Olympics are a prime arena for upsets, surprises, and sensational beginnings for the athletic legends of tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean that the games don’t play host to some familiar aspects, too.

One such familiarity is the ever-pronounced presence of the United States women’s gymnastics team, spearheaded by the one and only Simone Biles, who at just 27 is the most awarded gymnast of all time (altogether, she has 43 medals, 32 of which are gold).

Between Biles and her teammate Jordan Chiles, the United States women’s gymnastics team made up two-thirds of the women’s floor event medal podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics, topped by Brazil’s gold medalist, Rebeca Andrade. The photo of that trio is already iconic, but we wouldn’t have gotten it had Chiles’ coaches not stepped in at the last minute.

Jordan Chiles’ floor score update, explained

Chiles struck bronze for the women’s floor finals, but it was initially set to go to Ana Bărbosu of the Romanian team. Bărbosu scored 13.700 on her routine, while Chiles scored 13.666, but per an inquiry from Chiles’ coach, the latter’s score was updated to 13.766, which shot Chiles up to third place and booted Bărbosu from the running.

Now, that probably makes gymnastics scoring sound arbitrary, but it’s a bit more concrete than one might think. Floor scores in gymnastics are made up of two components; a “difficulty score” (known as D-score) and an “execution score” (E-score).

An E-score starts at 10.0 points and receives deductions for every mistake the gymnast makes during their routine. This can include balancing struggles, falling, or improper posture. A D-score, meanwhile, pinpoints the eight most difficult gymnastics skills performed during the routine and grades them based on where the skills fall on a scale of A to J (A’s are worth 0.1, J’s are worth 1.0).

In Chiles’ case, one of the moves she displayed during her routine — a tour jeté full, which is a type of split leap — was, in the eyes of her coaches, improperly credited in the D-score. Chiles initially finished her floor routine with a D-score of 5.8. After the inquiry, the score was elevated to 5.9 — in other words, it was decided that the tour jeté full was graded one degree lower than what it should have been — which changed her overall score from 13.666 to 13.7666. Chiles’ E-score for the routine was 7.866, and she received no additional point penalty; additional penalties can come in the form of stepping out of bounds or going over your allotted time.

Bărbosu, meanwhile, finished with a higher E-score at 8.000, but a 5.8 E-score and an additional 0.1 point penalty saw her finish with a 13.700 score, giving Chiles the bronze.

Why was the bronze medal then stripped from Jordan Chiles?

The third-place finish was Chiles’ first individual Olympic medal win of her career, but it was later relinquished back to Bărbosu on Aug. 11 when the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee won an appeal regarding the inquiry that took place during the event, ultimately reverting Chiles’ score back to 13.666.

The appeal argued that the United States’ inquiry during the event came after the one-minute deadline for appeals, and the investigation conducted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport concluded that the inquiry came four seconds too late, thereby validating the Romanian claim and rearranging the women’s floor standings back to what they were prior to the United States inquiry. In other words, Chiles ultimately finished in fifth place with a score of 13.666, and Bărbosu got her bronze medal with 13.700.

Perhaps, then, “arbitrary” isn’t the worst word in the world to describe gymnastics scoring.

What is Rachel Zegler’s ethnicity?

Rachel Zegler is Colombian-American, born and raised in New Jersey. Her father is of Polish descent, while her mother is of Colombian descent, and in an interview with PopSugar, the actress said she identifies as a “white latina.” Zegler’s maternal grandmother immigrated from Barranquilla, Colombia, to the United States in the 1960s, and although neither Zegler nor her mother was born in Colombia, they were both raised in a Latin and Hispanic household.
