The summer months are sadly dwindling down as the crisp fall breeze begins to roll in, but it certainly wouldn’t be the changing of the seasons without Barack Obama unveiling his summer 2024 music playlist.

The concept of the former president revealing his favorite songs has long become a tradition that started all the way back in 2015. In the years since, the 63-year-old politician has released a variety of “end of year” playlists in December each year, but it looks as though he was a bit more eager this year to push his music taste out into the public for the end of the summer months.

The star-studded playlist features an array of popular artists and streamable songs — “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyonce, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, and “365” by Charli XCX, to name just a few. Meanwhile, the list also features several classic anthems such as “No Diggity” by Blackstreet, “Don’t Cry Baby” by Etta James, and “One of These Things First” by Nick Drake.

And yet, the music-loving masses can’t help but notice one Billboard chart-topper left off this list that has undoubtedly become the anthem of the summer — and that would be “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter. The head-bopping hit being left off is truly a surprise, as well as a lack of any Taylor Swift songs. Oh, Barack, all this time we thought you were a Swiftie.

Considering Obama included 44 toe-tapping songs, it’s likely that he simply got too lost in the music while carefully selecting and forgot to include several summer 2024 anthems. We forgive him.

We’d ask Trump what his summer songs are, but we already know the entire list would just be washed-up Kid Rock hits. That, or “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis.

The bone-headed cop is an overused comedic cliche, from The Simpsons‘ Chief Wiggum to Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad, but it has to be said that there’s some truth in every trope. And one TikToker seems to have had the misfortune of meeting the man who proves that sometimes fiction isn’t much different from fact.

User @bre_does_art had to air her frustration with others on the app after she had a unique encounter with a cop that’s equal parts frustrating and hilarious. Breanna wasn’t employing his services to solve a murder or locate a missing diamond, but simply to help her find where the local police station was and this oafish officer couldn’t even manage that.

Bre’s brush with the thickest member of the thin blue line began when she was pulled over by a cop one night because her tail light was broken. It wasn’t a big deal, though, as the cop gave her a fix-it ticket and all she had to do was get the issue sorted and then file the ticket at the police station. The only problem was that, come Tuesday when Bre went to do just that, she couldn’t find the station so she phoned them to get directions. Enter Deputy Dunderhead.

@bre_does_art

I always have very interesting encounters with the police #storytime

After clarifying that she wasn’t in an emergency, Bre explained that she was just inquiring how to get to the state police station. The dispatch cop’s response? “Steak? Why are you saying steak?” Upon Bre repeating her question, the cop groused: “Well, if you can’t find it, I guess I can send two officers to come get you, if you really can’t find it.” Bre again clarified that, no, that wasn’t necessary she was just looking for directions. “Why are you even going to the police department?” he grilled.

Bre stated that she needed a police officer to sign her fix-it ticket, to which the dispatcher deployed his dumbest retort yet. “It’s Monday, so they’re probably not even there,” the cop said confidently, displaying the detective nous that no doubt got him the job in the first place. A flabbergasted Bre then told him it was Tuesday to which he replied: “I said it’s Monday!” At this point, Bre decided she was probably better off on her own and ended the call.

In the end, Bre found her way there and after getting her ticket signed (by a cop who made her repeat herself) she handed it in and told the officer on desk about how Google Maps directs people to the local library instead of the police station, implying that this was a big issue that needs fixing. “Oh yeah, we know,” responded the officer, leading Bre to one final realization. As she concludes her video, “Okay, cool, so you’re all like this.”

TikTok couldn’t believe the empty-headedness of these officers, who appear to have transferred en masse from Springfield and graduated from the Police Academy films. “You should issue them a fix-it ticket,” quipped one commenter. “It’s like an episode of Parks and Recreation,” said another, aghast. Someone else may have solved what’s going on with the Maps address, though: “It probably used to take you to the police department but people found the library personnel to be more help in emergencies.”

The average score for a police officer intelligence test is 21, which translates to an IQ of 104, so that’s only slightly above the national average. What’s more, back in 2000 a man unsuccessfully attempted to sue the city of New York after his application to join the police was rejected because he scored 33 on his intelligence test, and he was deemed too smart for the job.

Clearly, a guy who doesn’t know what day it is and is daydreaming about a steak dinner while at work is a preferable choice.

Finding an abandoned yet lovable stray dog on the streets and taking it home is undoubtedly a huge dream for animal lovers. But what’s the only thing better than one stray dog falling you home? Well, two stray dogs, of course.

For one lucky animal lover who hit the bottle a little too hard, two stray dogs showcased their unwavering loyalty over on TikTok by following home a stranger who had just finished an intense drinking session at a local pub. Luckily for us, the smile-inducing magic moment was recorded by his daughter, who stumbled upon the two dogs happily in bed with her dad.

As the daughter focuses the camera on the phone, the funniest part about the entire interaction is how comfortable the stray dogs look, and how they both make it seem as though the daughter is interrupting their precious sleeping time with the dad — even despite the dogs not even belonging at the house in the first place.

As hilarious as the situation is, bringing home stray dogs is actually quite unheard of, with ASPCA reporting that only 6% of owners adopted a dog after rescuing it as a stray. This hugely outlines the “Adopt, don’t shop” slogan, which encourages new pet owners to adopt stray dogs from local shelters rather than shop around from private breeders or pet stores who unethically breed for greater profit.

So, get out there and adopt a stray dog who desperately needs a home. Just remember, they’re probably going to hog the covers, but at least they’ll be there for you when you’re stumbling home drunk from the bar.

A word of advice. Generally speaking, never pay someone for a service upfront in full before they provide it. It’s one thing to wait for a Big Mac after paying, but it’s quite another to agree to a very vague deposit from a cold-caller.

This rule rings true even if the hustlers in question are just starting middle school, a rule that TikTok‘s @fairyniceofyou seems to have forgotten. And indeed, a learning experience was quick to follow her lapse in judgement. The twist is that she learned that her new neighborhood was full of some alright kids.

The three-and-a-half minute storytime above lays out all the background details. Mandie was vibing in her new house one morning, having just moved to the neighborhood about a week ago, when she heard someone at the front door. She goes to greet her visitor, dreading the prospect of talking to an adult this early, and is delighted to see a group of young kids instead.

The kids ask if they can fix up Mandie’s lawn for a fee of $30, but as Mandie only had $18.50 in cash, they eagerly struck a deal. Mandie then hands the money to the kids, who report that they’ll be back as soon as they grab their gear from one of their parents’ houses. They leave, and that’s when it dawns on Mandie that she may have just been scammed.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case. The kids turned out to be true to their word, and were in fact raising money to rebuild their neighborhood’s outdoor hangout area. Mandie, of course, immediately tracked down 12 more dollars in cash when the kids turned out to be the real deal.

@fairyniceofyou

these kids are awesome! they told me not to buy a lawnmower so they could come back and asked me lots of questions about myself. I love them! They’re trying to raise money to rebuild their outdoor hangout area. I went and got $12 more out (in addition to the $18 I originally gave them) so I could pay them $30 total bc they deserved it. Great service, 10/10 would recommend to the neighbors 🫶🏼 #fypage #fypシ゚viral #foryoupage #faithinhumanityrestored #neighborhoodkids #raisedright

♬ Light of Night – Gakuen

The cherry on top? They did a fantastic job on her lawn.

Mandie is now a loyal customer of the Lawn Goonies, whose landscaping competence is only matched by how pleasant their personnel is, and all for the very low cost of $30 a job. To say that’s a deal and a half is an understatement. According to Workwave.com, the average monthly cost of lawn care is $100, with the rough range being from $65 to $150. The lowest extreme of these costs is $40, while the highest extreme is $900.

In other words, Mandie lucked out here, and if the Lawn Goonies keep up the good work that she allowed them to start, maybe they’ll be able to charge $900 a job one day. Follow your dreams, kids.

The modern world is evolving on a daily basis, and as our technologies and jobs progress, so too do our criminals.

Crime looks a lot different in 2024 than it did a few decades back, and that leaves some people at a loss when they’re faced up with a modern ne’er-do-well . Some people, but not TikTok user Cyd (@loveecydney), who found herself more than qualified to out a scammer when they made the attempt to pull one over on her.

Cyd took to TikTok to expose a woman she dubs “Scammy Sammy” after Sammy, a former friend of Cyd’s, stole the TikToker’s information and used it to pay for a trip overseas. Referring to the Los Angeles based content creator as a “career criminal,” Cyd provides all the receipts necessary to prove that Sammy used her credit cards to pay for a trip to Paris, including a week-long Airbnb that ran Cyd nearly $1,000, and she even had the gall to post the entire experience to social media.

Sammy honestly made it far too easy for Cyd to expose her, as she documented her stolen trip in real time on Instagram. As a result, Cyd provided a thorough dressing-down of her former friend, and she was joined by plenty of viewers in the comment section of her video, who promptly swooped into condemn Sammy’s actions and encourage Cyd to pursue legal action.

Thankfully, our credit card companies have protections for instances exactly like this. And, since Cyd was so on top of it, it seems she successfully managed to shut down her cards, dispute those fraudulent charges, and hopefully throw a wrench into Sammy’s stolen vaycay. She also outed a known scammer, protecting others in Sammy’s circle from being similarly taken advantage of.

However. tt doesn’t seem that she pursued legal action — at least not yet. Cyd hasn’t discussed the Sammy issue much since she posted her initial video, which could indicate that she’s in the midst of legal proceedings. If she decides to go that route, Sammy could face serious consequences. Credit card fraud can carry fines up to $10,000 and, in serious cases, jail time of up to ten years.

Sammy could be facing some major consequences, should Cyd choose to pursue the issue, but her reputation’s taken a hit regardless of legal action. Thanks to Cyd’s exposing video, she’s had no choice but to private several of her social media accounts, and disallow comments on her own TikTok videos. She clearly received an influx of questions about her scammy behavior, and chose to silence the objections rather than face up to her actions.

From a microwave trick to anxiety-inducing bugs in the pantry, there is no shortage of things that can go wrong in the kitchen. Usually you can count on your coffee maker to run smoothly… but not always.

TikTok user @emmarthompsonn was frustrated when she turned on her Nespresso… and the machine just kept going. Instead of making the perfect amount of coffee (enough for one cup… or the first cup of the day if you drink caffeine like Lorelai Gilmore), the Nepresso went rogue and filled up another half a cup.

Emma was, naturally, upset since the machine cost $150 and yelled at it, which was definitely the right reaction. So, what do you do when your Nespresso has a mind of its own and has decided to mess with you and ruin your day before it’s even started? Do you hope a new Nespresso works better while mourning the lower amount in your bank account? Do you buy another type of coffee machine (same problem)? What about going to a coffee shop every morning and at least knowing that a hot cup is waiting for you, although, again, that adds up quickly? There’s no great answer here.

Thankfully, fellow coffee lovers came to the comment section to help out because everyone agrees this is a terrible and unfair problem. While some thought she had it on the declare or cleaning setting, TikTok user @coletaneademoments might have saved the day with the most logical explanation: if you use a pod that isn’t the Nespresso brand, it won’t work properly. Emma replied “That makes so much sense, it’s only my Starbucks ones that do it.”

According to the Nespresso website, this specific problem would be called “leakage or unusual coffee flow.” The brand says the water tank could be in poor shape or not in the right spot. Since, according to Statista.com, 65.8% of people answering a survey said they make coffee themselves vs. buying it, it’s definitely important to find a machine that doesn’t go wild.

It sounds like Emma never did get her machine to work properly, but things worked out for her in the end. She shared a TikTok a little while later promoting Cometeer Coffee and said “so apparently you can make a good coffee at home now without a machine.” Everyone deserves the peace of mind that they can enjoy their morning brew without worrying about a machine taking over their kitchen.

There was no way the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon wouldn’t be overwhelmingly popular. While complaints and questions about GOT series finale still haunt viewers, a deep dive into House Targaryen promises something different. The prequel is a slow-burn if there ever has been one, leading to a captivating story about generational trauma.

And after the anticlimactic conclusion of season 2, there are still a lot of questions left to be answered. Will Nettles will make an appearance? Will this Dance of the Dragons ever actually begin? And exactly how many seasons does the series have in the works?

Will there be a House of the Dragon season 3?

On June 13th, 2024, Variety reported that House of the Dragon will have a third season. Given the immense popularity of the first season and viewership of the second, it’s not a surprise that Max greenlit the series for another go-round. Renewed interest in the show has also given rise to the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will be adapted from George R.R. Martin’s book of the same name and cover Ser Duncan the Tall. Season 3 of House of the Dragon was a forgone conclusion.

In an interview with TechRadar, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal said the writing team was focused on season 3 even before HBO granted it a season 3 renewal. Condal said “We know where the story ends,” and continued that having a road map of the plot can help make your storylines richer.

As House of the Dragon heads into production or its third season, the stakes are high. It is now common knowledge that the sophomore season didn’t go as planned — for fans or creatives. The season was shaved down to only 8 episodes and the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet has yet to see the light of day (per Entertainment Weekly). Condal claimed that they wanted to do the battle right, but it has come at the expense of season 2. Despite these setbacks, season 3 is imminent, as well as the conclusion of the series.

According to Variety, Condal announced that House of the Dragon would conclude after 4 seasons. This news may be a relief for those still wounded by the finale of Game of Thrones. Dragging out a story longer than necessary never helped anyone. It remains to be seen if House of the Dragon will meet the same fate.

Though half the span of its predecessor, 4 seasons still seems like a long time to drag out the Dance of the Dragons — especially when Daemon (Matt Smith) wasted an entire season away from the rest of the cast. Regardless, perhaps this is an opportunity to right the sins of the past and give fans the finale they have always wanted. The first 2 seasons of House of the Dragon are currently streaming on Max.

Will Mephisto finally enter the MCU in ‘Agatha All Along?’ https://wegotthiscovered.com/marvel/will-mephisto-finally-enter-the-mcu-in-agatha-all-along/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/marvel/will-mephisto-finally-enter-the-mcu-in-agatha-all-along/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 13:41:44 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1738413 It would certainly be as good a place as any to introduce him.]]>

Up next on the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s sparse 2024 calendar is Agatha All Along, the Kathryn Hahn-led dark fantasy miniseries that boasts the distinction of having the most annoyingly gimmicky marketing backbone yet. Yes, Feige, we get it, it was never Coven of Chaos, it was never House of Harkness, but it was Agatha All Along, just like the song from WandaVision that the internet fell in love with. I bet you’re pleased as punch with that one.

Speaking of WandaVision, Agatha All Along marks the return of Jac Schaeffer to the showrunner’s chair (Schaeffer spearheaded WandaVision, which is still quite easily one of the franchise’s most incredible shows), and the idiosyncratic nature of Agatha All Along‘s trailers suggest that we could be in for quite a victory here.

Of course, as we saw with Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s no victory in Marvel’s eyes unless you satisfy the cameo/setup quotient in the eyes of fans, and considering so many were convinced that Mephisto would appear in WandaVision, could the very suitable setting of Agatha All Along finally be his MCU debut?

Will Mephisto appear in Agatha All Along?

There’s been no official confirmation of Mephisto for Agatha All Along, even if that’s hardly proof of his absence. And for those of you wondering if that hellish demon at the end of the trailer is Mephisto, that entrance is entirely unbecoming of a villain of Mephisto’s pedigree, and there’s no way we’d be able to take him seriously with those hand-wings.

Moreover, Mephisto is reportedly due to appear in Ironheart, with the character strongly alleged to be the true identity of Sacha Baron Cohen’s character. Cohen’s involvement itself is something Marvel has been playing coy on, but it appears we can count on his appearance at this point.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean we can count on him being Mephisto, it does seem more likely that Ironheart will be his entry point into the franchise. And while Agatha All Along would make more sense for him as a debut, the tonal differences between Ironheart and Agatha All Along would make that transition to Ironheart a bit jarring. But then, that’s assuming that he’s even in Ironheart.

The final answer, then, is that no one well and truly knows if Mephisto will be in Agatha All Along, Ironheart, or even anything before Avengers: Secret Wars, and frankly, we shouldn’t be worrying ourselves about that. Kicking back and hoping that Agatha All Along turns out to be as good a show as it seems is a much better use of one’s time.

Agatha All Along premieres its first two episodes on Disney Plus on Sept. 18. The series will run for nine episodes.

How to watch ‘Attack on Titan’ in order https://wegotthiscovered.com/anime/how-to-watch-attack-on-titan-in-order/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 13:33:00 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1042328 You don't want to miss out on one of the most impactful anime of all time.]]>

If you’ve dipped your toes in the anime and manga community, there is a 99 percent chance that you’ve heard about Attack on Titan. It’s one of the best pieces of media that Japan has offered us, and insanely popular, too.

Based on Hajime Isayama’s manga, the anime completely took over the world with its first season in 2013, introducing viewers to a society ruled by fear and hunted by man-eating titans. Fortunately, there are plenty of characters willing to put their lives on the line to defeat them. Bloody, intense, and with extremely high stakes, this series is battle shonen at its finest, but like all great things, it had to come to an end.

The Attack on Titan anime concluded in November of 2023 with a super controversial finale. While fans were sad to see it go, this means that folks can now watch the entire series without having to wait between seasons. Whether you’re a newbie looking to dive into this world of titans for the first time or a longtime fan who wishes to rewatch it, we’ve got you covered.

Attack on Titan has a whole lot of content. Besides the main anime, which is comprised of four seasons, there are multiple Original Video Animations (OVAs), including the spin-off mini-series, Attack on Titan: Junior High. This type of content mainly acts as side stories, and while entertaining, they’re not all considered canon by fans.

Since Junior High consists of imagined scenarios of the characters in school, it’s completely irrelevant to the rest of the story, so you can skip it. The statuses of the other OVAs, however, have been a topic of debate for years, particularly because some give us relevant backstories and context to the world of Attack on Titan. For these reasons, OVAs like “Ilse’s Notebook” and “A Choice With No Regrets” are well-loved by fans and a must for anyone looking to explore this world further.

To watch this anime in its entirety, with OVAs and the spin-off included, you can use the following list as a guide:

  • Season 1 (episodes 1-25)
  • “Ilse’s Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member” OVA
  • “The Sudden Visitor: The Torturous Curse of Youth” OVA
  • “Distress” OVA
  • “A Choice With No Regrets” OVAs, parts 1 and 2
  • Season 2 (episodes 26-37)
  • “Lost Girls: Wall Sina, Goodbye” OVAs, parts 1 and 2
  • Season 3, part 1 (episodes 40-49)
  • “Lost Girls: Lost in the Cruel World” OVA
  • Attack on Titan: Junior High
  • Season 3, part 2 (episodes 50 – 59)
  • Season 4, part 1 (episodes 60-75)
  • Season 4, part 2 (episodes 76-87)
  • Season 4, The Final Chapters: Part 1
  • Season 4, The Final Chapters: Part 2

Here’s how you can watch Attack on Titan online

Attack on Titan is currently available for streaming on platforms like Crunchyroll or Hulu. However, if you run into any location-based restrictions trying to stream through either of these platforms, you might want to consider using a VPN (or Virtual Private Network).

VPNs allow you to alter your viewing location to another country and access more shows & movies across your preferred streaming platforms. The easiest way to get a VPN is by signing up for a paid VPN service, such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN. Even better, both options offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ to feature the MCU’s most unlikely crossover cameo yet and resurrect a franchise we feared was prematurely dead https://wegotthiscovered.com/marvel/daredevil-born-again-to-feature-the-mcus-most-unlikely-crossover-cameo-yet-and-resurrect-a-franchise-we-feared-was-prematurely-dead/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/marvel/daredevil-born-again-to-feature-the-mcus-most-unlikely-crossover-cameo-yet-and-resurrect-a-franchise-we-feared-was-prematurely-dead/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 13:29:40 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1738397 How's that for being born again?]]>

Just when you thought Deadpool & Wolverine had claimed the crown and couldn’t ever be beaten, Daredevil: Born Again has come along and delivered what could be the most unexpected crossover cameo the MCU has ever given us.

Marvel Studios unveiled a first look at the much-anticipated relaunch of the Man Without Fear’s adventures at this August’s D23 — at least, to those in attendance. Unfortunately, the trailer has yet to be officially released online, but thanks to the wonders of leaks and first-hand reportage we know what the teaser contained.

On top of glimpses of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, not to mention the return of Bullseye, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson, and the introduction of Muse and White Tiger, the trailer also confirmed another addition to the cast that’s left fans scratching their heads.

Sorry, Channing Tatum. Move over, Wesley Snipes. The most out-of-left-field MCU cameo surely has to come from this Daredevil: Born Again trailer. The D23 first-look footage confirmed that Mohan Kapur will feature in the series, reprising his role as Yusuf Khan — father to Kamala “Ms. Marvel” Khan — from both Ms. Marvel and The Marvels.

Aside from the relative obscurity of the character — sorry, Yusuf, but Kamala’s mom Muneeba is the supreme Khan family member — the fact that the world of Ms. Marvel is crossing over with Daredevil at all is something of a head-scratcher. For starters, Born Again promises to be an extension of the street-level side of the MCU — inhabited by the Defenders, the Punisher, and Echo — rather than the cosmic side Kamala dwells in. On a geographic level, too, the Khans live in Jersey City, not Matt Murdock’s Hell’s Kitchen home turf.

What’s more, it’s surprising that the studio would elect to call back to The Marvels so soon after its infamous box office devastation last November. All signs had pointed to Marvel throwing the Brie Larson sequel under the bus — see Deadpool’s “You’re joining at kind of low-point” joke to Wolverine in D&W — and quietly cancelling projects like Captain Marvel 3, a Photon spinoff, and perhaps even the Young Avengers movie (notice the lack of an update at either Comic-Con or D23). And yet here Yusuf is to remind us of Marvel’s greatest financial failure.

Filming restarted on Born Again, after it was overhauled from top to bottom, in January 2024, so it’s not like this decision was made prior to The Marvels‘ release. Those who miss Ms. Marvel can likely take this as a good sign, then, that Kamala is still very much a tentpole figure of this franchise going forward. If we get a Daredevil/Ms. Marvel team-up before Daredevil/Spider-Man, though, then something’s definitely up with the timeline.

Who is Robert Brians, the man who intentionally drove his twin toddler daughters off a cliff? https://wegotthiscovered.com/true-crime/who-is-robert-brians-the-man-who-intentionally-drove-his-twin-toddler-daughters-off-a-cliff/ https://wegotthiscovered.com/true-crime/who-is-robert-brians-the-man-who-intentionally-drove-his-twin-toddler-daughters-off-a-cliff/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 13:03:43 +0000 https://wegotthiscovered.com/?p=1738382 He told his ex-wife he was sending the girls to heaven and he'd see her in hell. ]]>

No crime is more troubling than a parent breaking the sacred family bond and attempting to murder their children. It’s especially troubling when the children are toddlers can’t take care of themselves at all, and are just innocently along for a ride. That’s what happened to two twin toddlers when their father, Robert Brians, decided to perpetuate a murder-suicide by speeding off a cliff with his little daughters in his lap.

The moment that Brians sped off Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, California was captured by in grainy and disturbing surveillance camera footage from a nearby residence. In the video, the truck hits the curb extremely fast, flies into the air and lands completely in the water.

Brians, 51, was 47 years old when he decided to kill himself and his two daughters in an apparent move to upset his ex-wife. This didn’t come out of nowhere: the San Diego man had dealt with a run of bad luck before the incident. He owned a tile company but it wasn’t successful and he was forced to file for bankruptcy.

That would rattle anyone’s serenity but as a follow-up act his wife filed for divorce and he was arrested on charges of domestic battery. On June 13, 2020, he took his twin 2-year-old daughters from his parents’ house without his ex’s permission. He had just had a parental visit with the girls the night before, and he returned early in the morning to abduct them. When the ex-wife found out, she was frantic and tried to get in touch with Brians to find out what was going on.

The couple went back and forth through text and then the kids’ mom called 911. Brians told the mom numerous times that he had a plan: he was going to drive off a cliff with his girls by his side. One particular message said, “The girls are going to Heaven and I’m going to Hell to wait for you.”

Just three minutes before he made the fateful decision to complete his murder/suicide plan, he posted to Facebook: “Tonight, I’m sending my babies to Heaven.”

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, police scrambled to locate Brians before anything terrible happened. Authorities tracked his cellphone to the Sunset Cliffs area, even though he told his wife he was going to a different location.

Police spotted Brians’ truck in the area but before they could stop him he gunned it to the cliffs’ edge, hit the curb, went airborne and landed upside down in the water. Police gathered quickly. San Diego Police K-9 Officer Jonathan Wiese was on the scene within four minutes of the crash, and knew that if he didn’t act immediately, anyone who survived would surely perish in the waves. But how to get down there?

True heroes appear when the circumstances demand it, and that’s just what happened with Wiese. He would later say that his first thought was to jump right in after the truck, but he quickly realized he wouldn’t be much good to anyone if he hit something on his way down.

“Then, I remembered I have a 100-foot leash in my car that we use for SWAT missions, and I thought if that can hold my 95-pound dog, then maybe it could hold me.”

Things were especially frantic because officers then spotted Brians treading water with both of his daughters in his arms. This offered a little bit of relief to officers, but time was of the essence.

“They were getting pushed up against the cliff by the waves,” Wiese said. The officer quickly removed his uniform shirt, bulletproof vest and duty belt to lose some weight. He took the leash and “looped it under my armpits” and around his chest.”Some other officers had arrived so I threw the end of it to them and pretty much told them ‘hang on I’m gonna go over the edge,'” he said.

He bravely rappelled down the cliff in his makeshift climbing gear and swam to the father and his offspring. Wiese would later testify that when he reached Brians, one of his daughters was holding onto her father’s neck for dear life. The other girl was limp and lifeless. Here’s the account per the Carnegie Hero Fund foundation:

“Wiese removed the leash, entered the ocean, and swam to the man, who was much larger than him. Wiese then grasped the man, as he held the girls, and pushed them back to the rocks and pulled them out of the water. Wiese carried the unresponsive girl to the point where he descended the cliff and secured her to a backpack that officers lowered with the leash; officers hoisted her to safety. With help from a firefighter who had swum to the scene, officers similarly hoisted the second girl. A helicopter lifted the man to the top of the cliff.”

During the rescue, Brians spoke with Wiese about the crash, saying he couldn’t believe “we didn’t die” because he was trying very hard to kill everyone. He told Wiese that the girls were in his lap without seatbelts on when he drove over the cliff. “I couldn’t fathom how they survived,” the father told Weise. He also took the time to disparage his wife.

The more injured girl had serious injuries that included a brain bleed and compression fractures on her vertebrae. The other one was covered in scratches and bruises. They both thankfully survived. Brians was taken to the hospital and then booked in jail.

He was charged with 18 felony counts, including two counts of attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon enhancement; two counts of child abuse; two counts of kidnapping as well as burglary and domestic violence counts. In a plea deal with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Brians pleaded guilty to eight of the 15 charges against him. He will be sentenced to 31 years in California state prison, per the district attorney’s office, on Sept. 20. He deserves every bit of time the judge will give him to think about his selfish and homicidal actions.
